Vision Panels in Fire Doors: Size Limits by Rating
Quick answer: Vision panel size in a fire door is controlled by rating, location, glazing type and the assembly evidence. Fire-protection glass may be limited to small lites in higher-rated doors, while tested fire-resisting glazing systems can permit larger areas in defined configurations. Buyers should freeze the exposed glass size, radiator/heat criteria, frame/bead system and door rating together; there is no universal maximum rectangle for every fire door.
First identify the glazing family
Traditional fire-protection glazing is designed primarily to maintain integrity for its rating but can transmit substantial radiant heat. Fire-resisting insulated glazing systems add temperature/insulation performance and may be required where people pass close to the unexposed side or where sidelights and large screens are proposed. Ceramic, wired, tempered fire-protective and intumescent laminated products all carry different size, impact and framing limitations. Product names should be tied to test standards and markings.
North American size discipline
Under IBC/NFPA practice, permitted vision panel area varies by door rating and location, and the familiar 100 sq in limitation appears in several higher-hazard or horizontal-exit contexts without being a universal answer. The adopted code table, glazing mark and listing determine whether a larger lite is allowed and whether hose-stream/temperature-rise criteria apply. Specify exposed daylight size, not cut-out size, and verify the frame kit in the listing. Accessibility may also place the bottom of a viewing lite no higher than 43 in above the floor in applicable standards, which must be coordinated with lock height.
European and UK route discipline
Under EN testing/classification, a glazed doorset is covered by tested and assessed configurations. Maximum pane dimensions, aspect ratio, bead material, glazing seal and leaf construction sit in the field of application. An EI class with a small tested lite does not automatically extend to a near-full-height screen. UK specifications similarly need the certificate/data sheet for the exact doorset. Aspect ratio can matter because a tall narrow pane and a square pane of equal area behave differently.
Safety impact is a second approval
Fire performance does not remove human-impact safety duties. The glass and retaining system may need to meet safety-glazing requirements for doors and adjacent panels. Some traditional fire-protection glasses do not meet modern impact expectations in hazardous locations, which is why project teams choose listed safety/fire systems where both duties overlap. Marking should be checked on delivery; a substituted pane with the wrong mark is not a minor variation.

Specification checklist: what to confirm before ordering
- Destination code edition, wall type and the opening’s required fire/smoke function.
- Complete doorset configuration: leaf, frame, seals, glazing and hardware—not a leaf-only claim.
- Every scheduled size and configuration mapped to test, classification, listing or assessment scope.
- Self-closing, latching, clearances and frame fixing checked at installation.
- Labels, installation instructions and inspection records included in the handover file.

FAQs
What is the largest vision panel allowed in a fire door?
There is no universal maximum. It depends on rating, location, code route, glass family and the tested assembly evidence.
Why is 100 square inches mentioned so often?
It is an important limit in several North American contexts, especially more demanding locations, but it is not the universal cap for every fire door or glazing system.
Can acrylic be used as fire-door glazing?
Ordinary acrylic is not a fire-resisting glazing solution. Use a glazing system specifically tested and approved for the rated doorset.
Data note: Figures described as typical, common or planning ranges are industry budgeting ranges with the stated assumptions. Building-code duties, tested scope and final quotations depend on destination, selected construction and order schedule.
