FSC vs PEFC Chain of Custody for Wooden Doors: Buyer Guide
Quick answer: FSC and PEFC chain of custody (CoC) systems track certified forest material through processing and trade so an eligible claim can be made on the final product. For doors, the certificate must belong to the organisation making/selling the certified product, cover the relevant product group and site, and be supported by invoice-level claim and volume control. A logo printed in a brochure is not evidence.
FSC and PEFC are related tools, not identical labels
FSC is a global forest certification and CoC system with its own standards and trademark rules. PEFC is an umbrella endorsement system for national forest certification schemes, also with CoC and trademark requirements. Project teams may specify one or accept either, but procurement should name the accepted scheme, claim category and documentation instead of asking generally for 'eco wood'. The legal or green-building requirement of the destination should drive the choice.
Chain of custody follows control, not a species story
Certified status can be lost if material passes through a non-certified organisation outside the permitted arrangements or is mixed without an approved control method. A door factory buying certified boards cannot automatically sell the finished door with a claim unless its own CoC scope and accounting allow it. Outsourcing, trading entities and multiple sites need careful mapping. The entity on the sales invoice and the entity holding the certificate deserve the same scrutiny as a fire certificate.
How to verify a certificate
Record the certificate code, holder legal name, sites, product groups, claim method and expiry. Search the scheme's public certificate database and compare the scope to the door being ordered. Ask how certified input percentage or credit accounting supports the claim on your volume, what exact claim will appear on invoices/delivery documents, and whether use of an on-product label is permitted. Disconnects between a marketing certificate wall and database scope are a procurement red flag.
Specify the claim, not merely the scheme
A purchase order should state scheme, required claim category, eligible material input, labelling permission and documents required with each shipment. If only part of a project requires certified material, segregate door types and delivery documents. Avoid requiring 100% certified content where the selected veneer or board market cannot supply it consistently; define acceptable mixed/credit claims through the project sustainability consultant.
Environmental claims beyond CoC
Chain of custody addresses forest-material tracking. It does not by itself prove low formaldehyde emissions, recycled content, carbon performance or legality in every regulatory sense. Pair FSC/PEFC requirements with destination timber-legality due diligence, emissions class, EPD requests and finish VOC criteria where the building certification needs them. Keeping each claim in its own evidence lane prevents a credible forestry certificate from being misused as a general green badge.
Specification checklist: what to confirm before ordering
- Substrate and core identified separately from the decorative face or finish name.
- Full-size sample approved for colour, grain, sheen, edge detail and machining.
- Destination humidity, wet-area exposure and bottom-edge sealing addressed.
- Cleaning, repair and refinishing method agreed before handover.
- Batch variation, spare material and future colour matching planned.

FAQs
Can a factory use its board supplier's FSC certificate to sell certified doors?
Not simply by association. The seller/manufacturer generally needs its own applicable CoC certification and compliant claim/volume control for the finished product.
What is the fastest certificate check?
Search the official scheme database by certificate code and compare holder, site, product group and expiry with the contracting entity and order.
Does FSC or PEFC prove a door is low-VOC?
No. CoC concerns forest material tracking. Emissions need separate product standards and test evidence.
Data note: Figures described as typical, common or planning ranges are industry budgeting ranges with the stated assumptions. Building-code duties, tested scope and final quotations depend on destination, selected construction and order schedule.
