FCL vs LCL for Door Shipments: Cost Break-Even by CBM
Quick answer: For door shipments, FCL usually wins once packed volume, damage exposure and repeated handling are priced honestly; LCL can still suit samples, urgent top-ups and smaller crated orders. There is no universal CBM break-even because LCL minimums, destination charges and door pack geometry change by route. Calculate packed chargeable volume, quote both options to the same delivery point, and add a damage-risk allowance—not just the ocean line.
Why doors are not ordinary LCL cargo
Doors are large, flat, finish-sensitive and often packed in non-stackable crates. In LCL they may be handled at origin consolidation, transshipment and destination deconsolidation, and warehouse equipment may not suit long packs. A rate that looks cheap per cubic metre can be erased by minimum charges, oversize fees, destination handling and one damaged show face. Packaging must therefore be decided together with the freight mode, not afterward.
Run the break-even on all-in cost
List packed CBM and gross weight for every SKU, then request an FCL rate and an LCL rate to the same named point with the same Incoterm responsibilities. Include origin handling, documentation, destination terminal and warehouse charges, delivery, storage risk and insurance. LCL is normally charged by revenue ton/volume rules with minimums; FCL is mainly a fixed box cost to a threshold. The crossing point is the volume at which total LCL cost—not ocean freight alone—meets the FCL total.
Planning bands buyers can use
Samples of one to five doors normally travel by courier, air or LCL in a robust crate. Small project top-ups well below a useful container fill may remain LCL if crates are stack-rated and schedules are reliable. Once an order reaches a substantial fraction of a 20GP by floor footprint, FCL quotes deserve priority even if nominal CBM seems modest. Use our 20ft loading method to test footprint and stack height before asking forwarders to guess.
Packaging rules by mode
For LCL, specify a crate that can tolerate handling and possible top load only if the pack is designed and marked for it. Protect corners and faces, control moisture, label orientation and keep crate sizes within the consolidator's limits. For FCL, bundled packs may be efficient if forklift access, stack strength and unloading labour at destination suit them. In both modes, photograph each pack beside a tape and record packed dimensions before booking.
Speed, control and claims
FCL gives one container, one seal and less intermediate handling, though vessel schedules still govern arrival. LCL can depart more frequently on some lanes but adds cut-off, consolidation and deconsolidation time. Insurance should reflect replacement and delay consequences, not just invoice value. If a project start depends on a few special doors, splitting a small air/LCL advance shipment from the bulk FCL can be cheaper than upgrading the entire order.
Specification checklist: what to confirm before ordering
- Door schedule with sizes, quantities, hand, design and finish for every line.
- One baseline specification and an inclusion/exclusion matrix for frame and hardware.
- Sample count and timing, production planning band and milestone triggers stated.
- Packed dimensions, gross weights, stack limits and container plan confirmed before booking freight.
- Inspection method, payment milestones, change control and claim process written into the order.

FAQs
At what CBM does FCL become cheaper?
Only a lane-specific all-in comparison can say. Ask both forwarders to price the same packed list to the same point and include destination minimums and handling.
Can flat-packed doors travel safely by LCL?
Yes, in properly engineered crates, but long, non-stackable and glazed packs carry more handling risk. Upgrade packaging and insurance for LCL rather than reusing an FCL bundle design.
Why does FCL sometimes win at low CBM?
Door packs consume floor footprint and create oversize/handling charges. A mostly empty 20GP can be commercially cleaner than expensive, high-risk consolidation on some lanes.
