Take three width measurements: at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening. Take height measurements at both the left and right jambs, from the finished floor to the header. Then measure both diagonals from corner to corner. If the diagonals differ by more than 0.25 inch, the opening is out of square and will require shimming during installation.

The critical dimension is the width at the top of the opening, where the track mounts. The top track must be level. If the header is not level, the door panels will drift to one side when opened and may bind against the jambs.

For the bottom, the floor must be checked for flatness at the point where the bottom guide bracket mounts. A floor that slopes more than 0.125 inch across the opening width can cause the panels to scrape or the guide pin to pop out of the bracket.

When ordering, specify the finished opening width and height, not the rough opening. The manufacturer or supplier will size the panels to fit the finished dimensions. A custom width between 24 and 48 inches is usually straightforward. Openings shorter than 78 inches or taller than 96 inches may require custom panel fabrication, which increases lead time and cost.

Comparing 2-Door Bifold with Other Door Types

The choice between a bifold, sliding (bypass), or hinged door depends on the opening width, available wall space, and accessibility requirements.

Hinged doors require clearance for the swing arc — typically the door width plus 12–18 inches of floor space. They offer full access to the opening and are the best choice for accessibility, as they can provide the full opening width when open. However, in a tight laundry room, a hinged door may hit the washer or require the user to step back to close it.

Sliding (bypass) doors have two or more panels that slide horizontally on parallel tracks. They do not require swing clearance, but they only expose half the opening at a time. This makes them impractical for laundry rooms where you need to move large items in and out, or where you want full visual access to the machines.

2-door bifold offers a middle ground. It exposes nearly the full opening width when folded (minus the panel stack depth), requires no swing clearance, and can be operated from either side. The trade-off is that bifold doors have more moving parts — hinges, pivots, rollers — than a sliding door, which means more points of potential wear. The folding panels also intrude slightly into the room when open, reducing usable floor space by roughly the panel depth (typically 1.5–2 inches).

For openings wider than 48 inches, a 2-door bifold becomes impractical because each panel would be too wide and heavy. At that point, a 4-door bifold or sliding system is the appropriate choice.


Maintenance and Durability Factors

A 2-door bifold door will perform reliably for years if the hardware is maintained and the panels are not abused. The most common issues are:

  • Panels scraping the floor — often caused by floor settlement or a worn bottom guide. Adjust the pivot brackets or replace the guide.

For laundry rooms, moisture resistance is a durability factor. Dryer humidity can cause solid wood panels to swell or warp over time. Primed MDF or pre-finished panels with sealed edges are more resistant to moisture-related movement. If the door is adjacent to the dryer exhaust, ensure the vent is properly sealed to prevent warm, humid air from blowing directly onto the door surface.

When a 2-Door Bifold Is Not the Right Choice

A 2-door bifold is not suitable for openings wider than 48 inches, for exterior applications, or for areas requiring fire-rated or soundproofed doors. For accessibility compliance, note that a bifold door in the open position reduces the clear opening by the depth of the folded panels. If a minimum clear opening of 32 inches is required for wheelchair access, the finished opening must be wider than 32 inches to compensate for the panel stack.

Retrofitting Considerations
