Wrought Iron Door Prices per Unit: Bulk Cost Factors
Quick answer: Wrought iron door pricing is driven by opening size, steel section and skin construction, scroll/forging complexity, glass specification, thermal-break requirements, finish system, hardware and freight weight. For early budgeting, simple standard-sized steel-and-glass entry sets might be planned from several hundred US dollars per set, while large custom, thermally broken or heavily forged doors can move into the low thousands. Quote by complete set and landed cost, not by a decorative photo.
Separate true forged work from steel-framed doors
The market uses 'wrought iron' for products ranging from genuinely forged scroll components to welded mild-steel tube and sheet doors with decorative grilles. Labour and durability differ. Ask for a section drawing showing tube/skin thickness, insulation fill, glass retention, threshold and frame construction. Where motifs are cast or laser-cut rather than hand-forged, the product may still be appropriate—but it should not be priced or described as the same craft process.
Budget bands need a size baseline
For a standard single entry around 900-1,000 x 2,100 mm, an economical steel/glass project door may start in the several-hundred-dollar FOB conversation. Double doors, arched heads, sidelights/transoms, operable glass, genuine forging and thermal breaks push quickly beyond US$1,000 and can reach several thousand per set. These are planning magnitudes, not a price list. Per-square-metre pricing should include minimum charges and state whether frame, glass, lock and threshold are included.
Finish and corrosion are lifecycle costs
Hot-dip galvanizing, zinc-rich primers, powder-coat systems and liquid topcoats are selected by exposure. Coastal projects need pretreatment and drainage details that prevent water sitting in tubes and decorative joints. A low-cost black finish with no corrosion system can become the most expensive door after five winters. Specify weld finishing, coating build, touch-up method and whether internal sections are protected.
Glass, thermal and security specifications
Single decorative glass, double glazing, laminated safety glass and operable inner glass panels each change price and weight. Thermal-break iron doors use separated frame/leaf profiles and insulating cores to reduce condensation and heat transfer, but the whole product should be thermally assessed rather than inferred from the word 'insulated'. Multipoint locks, hinge capacity and frame anchorage matter because large iron doors are heavy and can distort if the frame is undersized.
Freight can dominate the unit economics
Iron doors are dense, large and often individually crated. Compare doors per container using packed footprint and stack limits, then add unloading equipment and site handling. Splitting frames, leaves and glass can increase count but adds assembly risk. For mixed villa projects, an aluminium or timber entry door may win on landed cost and maintenance even where its ex-factory price is similar.
Specification checklist: what to confirm before ordering
- Door schedule with sizes, quantities, hand, design and finish for every line.
- One baseline specification and an inclusion/exclusion matrix for frame and hardware.
- Sample count and timing, production planning band and milestone triggers stated.
- Packed dimensions, gross weights, stack limits and container plan confirmed before booking freight.
- Inspection method, payment milestones, change control and claim process written into the order.

FAQs
Why are wrought iron doors priced per square metre?
Size drives steel, glass and finishing area, but the rate is meaningful only with minimum charges and a stated construction/inclusion list.
Are all wrought iron doors thermally broken?
No. Ask for the section and insulation/thermal-separation details. Many decorative steel doors are non-thermal-break constructions.
What makes one iron door cost three times another?
Forged labour, size/arches, steel sections, glass build-up, thermal break, corrosion system, hardware and crate/freight requirements.
Data note: Figures described as typical, common or planning ranges are industry budgeting ranges with the stated assumptions. Building-code duties, tested scope and final quotations depend on destination, selected construction and order schedule.
