Single Leaf vs Double Leaf Doors: Sizing & Cost Comparison

Quick answer: Choose a double-leaf door when the required clear opening, traffic pattern or design proportion exceeds what one practical leaf can provide—not simply because the structural opening is wide. A single leaf is cheaper, simpler to seal and easier to make fire/acoustic compliant. A pair adds meeting-stile, sequencing, flush-bolt and hardware coordination, but can use one active leaf for daily traffic and both leaves for moving goods.

Calculate clear opening, not nominal leaf width

Usable width is reduced by frame, stops, hinges, leaf thickness at 90 degrees and hardware projection. For accessibility or egress, the governing measurement method belongs to the local code. In a pair, determine whether the required clear width must be achieved by one active leaf or by both leaves. This distinction often decides leaf split: equal pairs suit ceremonial entrances, while unequal pairs can give a full daily-passage leaf plus a narrower auxiliary leaf.

Single leaf: simplicity and sealing

One leaf has one hinge line, one latch line and no meeting stile. It is easier to weather-seal, sound-seal, latch and inspect, and usually costs less in both product and installation. The limit is practical leaf size and weight: a very wide solid door places high load on hinges and can bow, impact walls or become difficult to control with a closer. Standardized single sizes also pack and replace more efficiently.

Double leaf: flexibility with coordination cost

Pairs handle entrances, function rooms and equipment routes. They may need an astragal or rebated meeting stile, coordinator, top and bottom bolts on the inactive leaf, two closers or a closer/selector arrangement and careful seal compression. Fire and smoke performance must be tested as the pair, including meeting-stile hardware. Security can be weaker at the meeting stile if bolts and keeps are poorly specified.

Cost comparison beyond the leaf price

For budgeting, a pair costs more than the sum of two narrow leaves because frame, meeting hardware, bolts, seals and installation time increase. Against a very large single custom leaf, however, a pair may be cheaper to manufacture, ship and handle. Include closer count, panic devices, access control, astragal, threshold and future adjustment. In containers, pairs can be packed as leaves or prehung sets, so use the same pack-format calculation as other project doors.

Choose equal or unequal leaves by use pattern

Equal leaves suit symmetrical architectural openings and occasional full-width access. Unequal leaves suit daily one-person passage through the wider active leaf with the narrow leaf opened for furniture or cleaning equipment. Confirm door furniture does not collide at the meeting stile and that an open inactive leaf does not block another egress path. Mark active leaf, hand and bolt operation unambiguously on the schedule.

Specification checklist: what to confirm before ordering

  • Finished-floor datum, structural opening and frame dimensions measured before machining.
  • Leaf size, thickness, hand, swing and clearance targets frozen on the door schedule.
  • Hinge template, handle height, backset and lock/hole positions stated from the same datum.
  • One approved reference opening checked before repetitive installation.
  • Cut edges sealed and rated-door machining kept inside the approved scope.

FAQs

Is a double door always better for a wide opening?

No. If a practical single leaf can meet clear width, weight and closer limits, it is simpler and easier to seal. Pairs are justified by required opening or use pattern.

Do both leaves need closers on a fire door pair?

The listed assembly and code determine closing/latching for each leaf. Coordinate closers, selector/coordinator and bolts as a tested system.

What is an unequal pair?

A pair with leaves of different widths, allowing one normal daily leaf plus a narrower auxiliary leaf for occasional wide access.
