MDF Door Prices per Unit: Bulk FOB Cost Breakdown (2026)

Quick answer: An 'MDF door' normally means MDF-faced construction over a honeycomb, tubular, particleboard or other core—not a solid slab of MDF from face to face. For 2026 bulk budgeting from China, basic primed project sets commonly start in an indicative US$25-60 FOB band, veneer/HPL specifications around US$55-110, and tested fire doorsets around US$90-180+, provided the baseline size and inclusions are stated. Core and finish explain more of the spread than the MDF skin.

Define the construction behind the label

Ask whether the leaf uses moulded MDF skins, flat MDF faces or an MDF-faced engineered panel; then identify the core. Honeycomb is light and economical, tubular chipboard improves weight and screw engagement zones, solid particleboard brings mass and stability, and mineral constructions belong to fire doorsets. Face density and thickness matter for impact and machining, but advertising a board density without naming the core is incomplete.

Use one reference door for every price

Freeze a 2,000-2,100 x 800-900 mm class door at 35, 40 or 45 mm, name the finish, and state whether the price is leaf only or includes frame, architrave, hinges and lock preparation. The original habit of moving between slab and set pricing makes unit comparisons meaningless. In the planning bands used in this guide, treat prices as broad FOB ranges for repeated project quantities and standard sizes—not a live offer.

Indicative 2026 planning bands

Primed or paint-ready MDF-faced doors generally occupy the lowest band because they are efficient to finish on site. Melamine and PVC faces can reduce site painting but vary in repairability. Natural veneer and HPL add material and process cost and are selected for appearance or abrasion. Increase thickness, core mass, glazing, acoustic seals and prehung assembly and the same face can move up several price steps. Hardware is best budgeted separately because a basic lever set and a closer/electronic lock belong to different commercial categories.

Moisture is the hidden cost

Standard MDF is not a wet-area material. Bathroom and coastal specifications need moisture-resistant substrates, sealed edges—especially the bottom—and suitable finish systems. A cheap standard-MDF door that swells at the bottom costs more than a correctly specified MR or WPC alternative. For hotel bathrooms, separate the bedroom-entry leaf specification from the bathroom leaf if exposure differs.

Turn unit price into project cost

Add frames, hardware, machining, packing, container utilisation, freight, duty, installation and an allowance for damage or colour-batch variation. Quantities per repeated size and finish drive factory efficiency; one hundred doors in ten special sizes do not price like one hundred identical sets. Ask each supplier to complete the same inclusion matrix and give a validity date for exchange-rate and board-price movement.

Specification checklist: what to confirm before ordering

  • Door schedule with sizes, quantities, hand, design and finish for every line.
  • One baseline specification and an inclusion/exclusion matrix for frame and hardware.
  • Sample count and timing, production planning band and milestone triggers stated.
  • Packed dimensions, gross weights, stack limits and container plan confirmed before booking freight.
  • Inspection method, payment milestones, change control and claim process written into the order.

FAQs

Are MDF doors solid MDF?

Usually no. Most are MDF skins or faces over a lighter core, with timber/engineered stiles and rails. Ask for a section drawing.

Why is a 45 mm MDF door more expensive than a 35 mm one?

It uses more material and often a denser core, heavier hinges and different machining/packing. It may feel and perform better, but thickness alone does not create a fire or acoustic rating.

Can standard MDF doors be used in bathrooms?

Only where exposure is controlled and all edges are sealed. For repeated wetting or high humidity, specify moisture-resistant board or a more suitable door system.

Data note: Figures described as typical, common or planning ranges are industry budgeting ranges with the stated assumptions. Building-code duties, tested scope and final quotations depend on destination, selected construction and order schedule.
