Door Hinge Spacing Rule: Positions by Door Height & Weight

Quick answer: There is no single world hinge-spacing rule that safely covers every door. The manufacturer's template and, for rated doors, the tested hardware schedule govern. In ordinary practice, hinges are placed near the head and near the bottom with any intermediate hinge centred or positioned to control leaf weight and warping. Three hinges are a common project default for full-height solid doors; tall, wide or heavy leaves often need four and a higher hinge grade.

Start with the template, not a folk rule

North American, European and project-specific door factories do not all dimension from the same edge of the hinge or use the same head and sill offsets. A drilling drawing should state whether dimensions run to the hinge edge or centreline and from the leaf top, frame head or finished floor. Interchanging those datums creates errors even when the nominal spacing sounds familiar. Where replacement hinges must match an existing frame, copy the frame, not the internet rule.

A common layout pattern

A conventional three-hinge layout puts the top hinge close enough to the head to resist the pulling force at the top of the leaf, the bottom hinge above floor-finish and impact zone, and the third approximately midway or at the lock-rail zone specified by the manufacturer. Some systems move the middle hinge closer to the top because that is where bending and screw withdrawal loads concentrate. The exact offset should be frozen on the machining drawing for the project and repeated across every identical leaf.

How many hinges by size and weight

Light hollow residential doors may be supplied on two hinges in some markets, but three is the robust commercial default. Move to four hinges and a heavier grade when the leaf is tall (commonly once heights move toward 2,400 mm), unusually wide, solid/mineral-cored, heavily glazed or fitted with a closer. Hinge count cannot rescue undersized screws, weak stiles or a frame that is not fixed back to structure. The hinge maker's load table, adjusted for door width and closer use, is the specification tool.

Fire and acoustic doors are different

For a fire doorset, hinge type, number, screw specification and any intumescent protection belong to the tested evidence. Do not omit an intermediate hinge because a standard interior door looks similar. Acoustic doors also need hinges that maintain seal compression without leaf drop. If the leaf drops even slightly, the bottom seal and latch alignment can fail long before the hinge itself breaks.

Diagnose sag and binding

A narrowing head gap on the lock side and rubbing at the lower lock corner indicate drop. Check top-hinge screws, frame fixings behind the top hinge and hinge wear before planing. A door binding on the hinge side may have leaves set too deep or paint build-up; a springy close may indicate hinge leaves not flush or a twisted frame. Correct the load path first, then make cosmetic adjustments.

Specification checklist: what to confirm before ordering

  • Finished-floor datum, structural opening and frame dimensions measured before machining.
  • Leaf size, thickness, hand, swing and clearance targets frozen on the door schedule.
  • Hinge template, handle height, backset and lock/hole positions stated from the same datum.
  • One approved reference opening checked before repetitive installation.
  • Cut edges sealed and rated-door machining kept inside the approved scope.

FAQs

What is the standard distance between door hinges?

There is no universal distance. Top and bottom offsets plus the intermediate position come from the door or hinge manufacturer's template; the intermediate hinge is often centred or placed in the upper-middle load zone.

Do 2,400 mm doors need four hinges?

Usually four are prudent for tall or heavy leaves, but grade and leaf weight matter as much as count. Confirm from the hinge load table and the door machining drawing.

Can I add a hinge to stop a door sagging?

Only after fixing loose screws, frame anchorage and hinge wear. On a fire door, adding or changing hinges must stay inside the doorset evidence.
