Barn Door Soundproofing: 7 Ways to Reduce Noise

Sliding barn doors are a popular choice for interiors, but their natural air gaps around the edges let sound pass freely. The good news: a barn door can be made significantly quieter without losing its sliding function. This guide from the Jusen Doors factory covers seven practical ways to reduce noise through a barn door, ranked from quick wins to full acoustic upgrades.

1. Close the Perimeter Gap

Most sound leaks through the 10–20 mm gap between the door leaf and the wall. Fitting a perimeter acoustic seal set — side brushes and a bottom drop seal — typically cuts edge leakage by more than half and is the single most effective low-cost fix.

2. Choose a Solid, Dense Core

Hollow-core barn doors are acoustically weak. A solid MDF, solid wood or particleboard core raises mass per square metre and reduces sound transmission. For maximum reduction, Jusen builds 40–45 mm solid-core barn doors with an STC-rated core.

3. Add a Mass-Loaded Layer

Bonding a thin layer of mass-loaded vinyl to the back face of the door adds mass without changing the visible face. The added density improves the sound transmission class of the assembly noticeably, especially for mid-frequency noise.

4. Use an Acoustic Track System

Vibration travels through the metal track and hangers into the wall. Rubber-damped hangers and a wall-isolated track break that path. Our sliding hardware includes soft-close, rubber-bushed rollers that reduce both mechanical noise and sound flanking.

5. Seal the Track Housing

The track cover and the top gap above the door are often forgotten. A full-height acoustic track cover with internal brush seals closes this flanking path while keeping the sliding action smooth.

6. Add a Threshold Seal at the Floor

An automatic drop-down bottom seal engages when the door closes and lifts when it slides, so the floor gap is sealed without dragging. It is a standard option on our soundproof barn doors.

7. Upgrade to a Factory-Built Acoustic Barn Door

For the best result, specify a purpose-built acoustic barn door: dense core, perimeter seals, damped hardware and a sealed track, all manufactured and tested in one factory. Jusen supplies STC 30–52 acoustic barn door systems with custom sizes and finishes.

FAQ

How much noise can a barn door actually block?

A factory-built acoustic barn door with sealed perimeter and damped hardware can reach STC 30–52, which handles conversation, TV and moderate traffic noise. A standard decorative barn door blocks very little without seals.

Can a soundproof barn door keep its sliding function?

Yes. Drop seals lift during movement and engage on close, and the track cover is designed around the hardware travel, so sliding remains smooth.

Can Jusen customise sizes and finishes?

Yes. Sizes, core, veneer, paint finish and hardware are all customisable under our OEM/ODM service, with samples available before bulk production.
