This pattern is more common than 6 over 6 because it provides the traditional look while allowing an unobstructed view through the lower portion.

4 over 1 windows have four panes above a single pane. This is the most popular grid for transom windows because four vertical lites across a 36-inch width produces lites of reasonable proportion. The single bottom pane keeps the view clear and simplifies cleaning.

For transom windows specifically, the grid pattern is often simplified to just a number of vertical lites, such as “4 lite” or “6 lite.” The “over” terminology comes from double-hung windows and is applied loosely to transoms. What matters practically is the number of vertical divisions and whether any horizontal bar exists.

Grids are available as true divided lites (individual glass panes separated by muntins) or simulated divided lites (a grid applied over a single pane). True divided lites are more authentic but harder to clean and less energy-efficient because each pane creates more edge seal. Simulated divided lites are the practical choice for most buyers; they offer the same appearance with better insulation and easier maintenance.


Installation and Structural Considerations

Adding a transom to an existing door opening is not a simple trim job. The wall above the door is often a load-bearing header area, and cutting into it without proper support can compromise the structure.

Windows Over Doors: Benefits and Drawbacks

The primary benefit of a transom window is daylight. A 36-inch by 18-inch transom adds roughly 4.5 square feet of glazing to an entryway, which can significantly brighten a foyer or hallway that would otherwise be dark. This reduces the need for artificial lighting during daytime hours.

Transoms also create a sense of height. A door with a transom above it reads as taller and more substantial than a standard 80-inch door alone. This is why transoms are common in entryways of higher-end homes and commercial buildings.

Privacy is another advantage. Because the glass starts above eye level for most adults, transoms let in light without exposing the interior to view. This makes them suitable for front doors facing busy streets and for bathroom doors where privacy matters.

The drawbacks are fewer but real. A transom adds cost to the door system, both for the unit itself and for the structural work required to frame it. Cleaning the exterior of a transom above a door can be difficult, especially on second-story entries where a ladder is required. Energy performance is also a factor; every square foot of glass has lower insulation value than an equivalent area of insulated wall, even with low-E coatings.
