Hotel Door Specification Guide | Fire Code, Sound Rating & Hardware

Hotel Door Requirements Overview

Hotel doors must meet multiple requirements simultaneously: fire safety codes, acoustic privacy standards, accessibility regulations, and aesthetic design specifications. This guide covers the key considerations for specifying doors in hospitality projects.

Fire Code Requirements for Hotels

  • Guest Room Doors: Minimum 20-minute fire rating (many jurisdictions require 45-minute)
  • Corridor Doors: 45-60 minute fire rating
  • Stairwell Doors: 60-90 minute fire rating
  • Service/Back-of-House Doors: 20-45 minute depending on room function

Sound Rating Specifications

Guest room doors typically require STC 35-45 ratings for adequate privacy. Corridor doors need STC 45-50. Soundproof doors for meeting rooms and ballrooms may require STC 50+.

Hardware Packages

  • Lock Sets: Electronic card locks, mortise locks, or magnetic locks
  • Door Closers: Concealed or surface-mounted, adjustable closing force
  • Hinges: 4.5″ commercial-grade ball bearing hinges
  • Panic Hardware: Required for exit doors in most jurisdictions
  • Door Stops: Floor-mounted or wall-mounted
